She narrowly escaped abortion!
Surrogate Mom Gives Birth to Baby Girl with Serious Birth Defects Despite Parents' Order to Abort.
This was a true life encounter in the US were a surrogate mother was ordered to abort this precious soul simply because she had some birth defects detected by ultra sound during pregnancy. The baby narrowly escaped abortion due to surrogate mother's guts to keep the baby and look for another couple that will adopt her. Today, this baby is three years plus.
This still brings to the fore, the debate on abortion being lawful or unlawful. Well, that is not on our radar today. I just want to inform you a little about surrogacy just in-case you do not know.
Simply put, surrogacy is the practice by which a woman (called a surrogate mother) becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby in order to give it to someone who cannot have children.
Basically, it is the carrying of a pregnancy for intended parents. There are two main types of surrogacy, gestational surrogacy (also known as host or full surrogacy) which was first achieved in April 1986 and traditional surrogacy (also known as partial, genetic, or straight surrogacy). In gestational surrogacy, the pregnancy results from the transfer of an embryo created by fertilizing a detached human egg with a sperm inside a test tube (IVF), in a manner so the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the surrogate. Gestational surrogates are also referred to as gestational carriers. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is impregnated naturally or artificially, but the resulting child is genetically related to the surrogate. In the United States, gestational surrogacy is more common than traditional surrogacy and is considered less legally complex.
Armed with this basic information, do you think that this can be practiced in our African Society in other to help couples who have been waiting patiently on luck in other to have a child of their own?
